A quick guide to using Chipper Cash in Nigeria

Although electronic payments are growing tremendously in Nigeria (and Africa as a whole), sending and receiving money across borders remains a challenge. Thanks to Chipper Cash, money transfers to other African countries can now be made immediately (and free of charge!) At the push of a button.

With Chipper Cash, sending funds is just as smooth as receiving. The conversion / exchange rates are really reasonable and competitive too. In addition to transferring money, Chipper Cash also lets you pay bills (cable TV, internet, and electricity) and buy airtime.

In this guide, we will walk you through the features of the Chipper Cash platform and why it is one of the best means of sending money locally and internationally in Nigeria right now.

Available and platform support

Currently, you must have a smartphone to use Chipper Cash; there is no web support yet. The service is available to both Android and iOS users. You can download the app from the links below.

Chipper Cash is available in Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda and Ghana. The company also recently started operations in South Africa, making the region the seventh country in Africa.

Registration and onboarding

To use Chipper Cash in Nigeria, your phone number is the basic requirement to create an account. You can also use your email address. You will then need to enter the verification code sent to the number or email address you used to register.

Once you have registered with your phone number, you can verify your number via USSD – tap the dial button or manually enter / dial the provided USSD short code on your phone’s dialer. You will also be asked to verify your number every time you sign in to your account – when you sign out of the app.

Another unique feature that you would love about Chipper Cash is that you can connect and log in to your wallet / account using multiple numbers or email addresses. On your account profile page, tap ‘Personally’ and choose ‘Add a phone or email‘to add more numbers or email addresses.

While Chipper Cash doesn’t say whether there is a limit to the number of phone numbers or email addresses that can be linked to a single wallet / account, it’s really a cool feature that allows for flexible login options.

If you lose your phone number, you can still access (and verify) your Chipper Cash wallet using the secondary numbers or email addresses.

Account verification and transfer limits

As a newly registered user, you can get unlimited money from anyone, anywhere. However, you can only send a maximum of four million naira (4,000,000 N) and twenty million naira (2,000,000 N). New users can only withdraw twenty thousand naira (N 20,000) per day for withdrawals.

In order to increase this withdrawal limit, you will need to verify your identity. To do this, you (as a Nigerian user) need to provide your bank verification number (BVN) and take a selfie. Chipper Cash will review the information provided and increase your transaction limits accordingly. Account verification is also required to activate your “Chipper Account Number” (more on this later).

It will take a few minutes (sometimes hours) to confirm after the required information is provided. As a verified user you can:

  • Send: N5,000,000 daily | N35,000,000 weekly
  • Take off: N 1,000,000 daily
  • Receive: Unlimited amount of money

Currently, Nigerian users can only top up their Chipper Cash wallet via card payments. As a first-time user, you will need to deposit N10 (Ten Naira) into your account to add a bank card.

Note: Chipper Cash does not charge any fees for depositing money. The N10 is deposited into your chipper wallet.

send money

With Chipper Cash you can send money to other registered Chipper Cash users in your phone book. You can also send money to your contacts who are not registered with Chipper Cash. The recipient will be asked (via SMS) to create a Chipper Cash account in order to receive the money.

Note: If the recipient doesn’t open an account to claim payment, the money will be refunded to you.

To send money to another Chipper Cash user or to someone on your contact list, tap the Send button on the activity page and select the person you want to send money to from your contact list. I really liked the contact segmentation and identification provided by Chipper Cash – contacts who are registered with Chipper Cash can be found in the Contacts section above, next to their country flag and full name.

You can also use the search field to use their username to find other Chipper Cash users who are not in your contact list. If you have a user’s QR code, you can tap Scan Code to send them money quickly.

It’s also worth noting that Chipper Cash boasts of really competitive exchange rates. For the context, the official Naira to Uganda shilling The interest rate was (at the time of writing) pegged to ₦ 1 = UGX 9.60 while Chipper Cash had a slightly reduced (but reasonable) rate – ₦ 1 = UGX 9.00.

The official naira in Kenyan shillings was Ksh 1 = 3.62. On Chipper Cash, Ksh 1 = 3.88. These rates are very reasonable and the best you would get on the market when compared to other money transfer and bill payment apps.

Bill payments

As mentioned earlier, Chipper Cash lets you pay internet, electricity, and television bills. I used the app to buy airtime and it was really quick and smooth. You can also tap the Contacts button to buy airtime for someone on your contact list.

So next time you want to Pay your DStv or GOtv bill in Nigeria, you should try Chipper Cash. Best of all, you get 2% off every Airtime purchase. In addition, bill payments are free of charge. This makes Chipper Cash one of the few payment providers that doesn’t charge users for paying bills, sending money, or topping up their accounts.

Like paying bills, buying credits, and other services on Chipper Cash, withdrawing funds on the platform is free. For Nigerian users, you can only withdraw funds from your Chipper Wallet to your bank account. To do this, navigate to Profile> Cash Out and set up your bank account.

Go to Profile> Payment Methods to add your bank account. The withdrawal to my account was processed in seconds and my bank was instantly credited.

Auxiliary bank account

As an additional benefit, Chipper Cash users also receive a bank account (powered by Providus Bank). This account (referred to as “Chipper account number”) works just like your normal bank account; People can send money to the account number from their banks and banking apps. The money will be transferred directly to your chipper wallet.

This auxiliary bank account serves as an additional means of depositing funds into your Chipper Wallet. One thing, however, is that this account number is not assigned to any user by default. If you want one, you have to request it. To do this, navigate to your profile and tap the incomplete account number to send a request.

Chipper Cash will review your request and inform you of the status. This can take hours or sometimes days.

Money request

If you run out of money or someone owes you, you can use the “Request” function of the Chipper Cash app to request money from your contact list or other Chipper Cash users.

Chipper Cash has taken a number of steps to protect your account and funds. As mentioned before, every time you log out of the Chipper Cash app, you will need to go through two-step authentication (via SMS) before you can log back into your account.

The app also has a security lock feature that asks you to enter your Chipper PIN every time you close the app. This is an extra layer of security that prevents anyone with access to your device from opening your Chipper Cash dashboard without your approval. You can activate “Hide credit” to hide your credit on the home screen.

Cheaper, faster, better

Overall, the Chipper Cash is great; It’s an app for the everyday African smartphone user. The app is well designed and most importantly, easy to navigate. The discount on airtime and zero billing fees will also save you a ton of money – cumulatively. Money transfers, bill payments, cash deposits, etc. are instant. Cross-border transfers are just as fast as local transfers.

There is in-app support, but you can also reach the Chipper Cash Customer Care Team at Facebook or Twitter. I didn’t use in-app support, but I was able to reach customer service on Twitter a couple of times. The replies to my inquiries did not come immediately, but they were resolved in a timely manner.
