MEMPHIS, Tennessee – Memphis police released pictures of four suspects they believed to be responsible a car theft downtown on Wednesday afternoon.
It happened when a woman arrived at the Malco Powerhouse Cinema for work. She says four teenagers walked up to her, pretended their tire was flat, and then they took her car when she got out to check.
“It happened so quickly,” said the WREG woman.
The woman, who does not want to be identified, says she tried to hold on to the driver’s door but had to let go of it after being dragged across the parking lot.
“My arms are scratched,” she said.
Investigators are trying to determine if this case is related to a similar incident that occurred a few blocks away on Tuesday afternoon.
A 74-year-old woman, who also does not want to be identified, says she was leaving the parking garage of her apartment complex on Mina Avenue when three teenagers approached her. She says one of them, a young girl, knocked on her window and said her rear tire was flat.
“I got out of the car and went back, and within a second she jumped in [and started driving]”, She said,” and the two boys ran after her and jumped into the back seat. “
The woman could only watch as they sped off in the car with handbag and cell phone.
“I can’t get this picture out of my head. I can not!” She said.
The incident at the Malco Theater was captured on camera, and possibly the incident in the parking garage as well. Both victims hope that all those responsible will be arrested soon.
“I don’t understand the audacity,” said the 74-year-old. “I mean, the absolute boldness of these kids.”
At the last checkpoint, the police are still looking for the vehicle that was taken away in the Malco incident. The 74-year-old woman’s car was recovered in South Memphis on Wednesday.
