The Ministry of Commerce renovates the smoking room and gives canoes to the women of Kartong –

The Ministry of Commerce, Industry, Regional Integration and Employment (MoTIE) handed over, on Thursday April 14, 2022, three canoes and a smokehouse to support the women of Kartong in their oyster production.

The canoes and the oven are expected to increase the level of production and income, with the main focus being on the safety of the production process. The donated materials were funded by the Government of The Gambia and UNDP’s Entrepreneurship and Private Sector Development Project (EPSDP).

Speaking at the event, MoTIE Permanent Secretary Mr. Ebrima Sisawo thanked EPSDP and ECOWAS Country Office for reaching out to women in Kartong to support their business operations and improve the cross-border cooperation. According to him, the donated boats and life jackets will improve the lives of women in oyster production and help alleviate the challenges women face in harvesting processes.

“The equipment will improve women’s abilities in oyster trading and facilitate the distribution of their products to reach their target customers,” PS Sisawo said.

Isatou Madeline Jarju, President of the Women Oyster Association in Kartong, expressed her joy and gratitude to the EPSDP and the Gambian government for their gesture, saying that the donated equipment will greatly help them in providing quality oyster production. and affordable in Kartong.

“I encourage my fellow citizens to take good care of donated materials for sustainability purposes,” echoed Madeline Jarju.
